He joined David Lee Roth's band in 1985.

Via first played with David Lee Roth on the album Eat 'Em and Smile.

Vai produced the second David Lee Roth solo album, Skycraper, replacing Ted Templeman. After the Skyscraper Tour he left the group to join Whitesnake, playing on the album Slip of the Tongue and its promotional tour, after which Whitesnake temporarily broke up. Vai has published several acclaimed instrumental guitar albums.
